Brief description of Cosopt:
Cosopt eye drops contain a combination of Dorzolamide and Timolol. Cosopt is used to treat certain types of glaucoma and other causes of high pressure inside the eye. Lowering high pressure inside the eyes helps to prevent blindness.
How Cosopt works?
Dorzolamide is a sulfonamide and a highly specific carbonic anhydrase II (CA-II) inhibitor, which is the main CA isoenzyme involved in aqueous humor secretion. Inhibition of CA-II in the ciliary processes of the eye decreases aqueous humor secretion, presumably by slowing the formation of bicarbonate ions with subsequent reduction in sodium and fluid transport. Timolol competes with adrenergic neurotransmitters such as catecholamines for binding at beta(1)-adrenergic receptors in the heart and vascular smooth muscle and beta(2)-receptors in the bronchial and vascular smooth muscle. Beta(1)-receptor blockade results in a decrease in resting and exercise heart rate and cardiac output, a decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and, possibly, a reduction in reflex orthostatic hypotension. Beta(2)-blockade results in an increase in peripheral vascular resistance. The exact mechanism whereby Timolol reduces ocular pressure is still not known. The most likely action is by decreasing the secretion of aqueous humor.
Dosing Information for Cosopt:
The medication is for ophthalmic use only and to be used only after the prescription from the doctor. Tilt your head back, look upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop in your eye. Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of your eye (near the nose) and apply gentle pressure. Try not to blink and do not rub your eye. This will prevent the medication from draining out. Some side effects are likely to occur such as Temporary blurred vision, temporary burning/stinging/itching/redness of the eye, watery eyes, dry eyes, feeling as if something is in the eye, sensitivity of eyes to light, strange taste in the mouth, or headache.
Precautionary Measures while using Cosopt:
- Remove your lenses and spectacles before using the eye drops.
- Avoid the use in case you previously had any eye surgery.
- Avoid touching the tip of medication in order to avoid contamination.
