A Ganfort eye drop is usually recommended for the treatment of Raised pressure in the eye (ocular hypertension) and open-angle glaucoma. It is a combination medicine that contains two active ingredients, Bimatoprost and Timolol maleate. Aqueous humour in the eye maintains pressure within the eyeball. The increased ocular hypertension can damage the eye.
Mechanism of action of Ganfort:
Ganfort shows action in two ways: Bimatoprost comes under the class of medication known as Prostaglandins. It works by mimicking the action of a naturally-occurring prostaglandin that causes reduced pressure in the eye. Timolol is a class of medication known as beta-blocker. It works by blocking the beta receptor in the eye that reduces the amount of aqueous humour. Therefore reduces the inflow of aqueous humour into the eyeball and so decreases the pressure within the eye in a different way.
How to use Ganfort?
You are recommended to use one drop in the eye (or eyes) affected once a day. You should wash your hands well before you use Ganfort drops. Open the bottle, or remove the tip of the unit. Now tilt your head back a little and pull the lower lid of your eye downwards to form a pocket. You should apply enough pressure to release one drop into your eye. Do not use more than one drop as the use of more than a few drops does not improve your glaucoma but will increase the risk of side-effects.
What are the side effects of Ganfort?
Dizziness, corneal erosion, eye discharge, visual disturbance, iritis, conjunctival oedema, blepharitis, eyelid pain, visual acuity worsened, trichiasis, iris hyperpigmentation, deepening of eyelid sulcus, eyelid retraction.
Warning and precautions of Ganfort:
- You should not use this medication if you have a breathing problem such as asthma or COPD.
- Do not use this medication if you have had problems in the past with viral infections in your eye.
- You should not use this medication if you have had surgery on your eye to replace or remove the lens (such as cataract removal).
- Avoid use of this medication in the case of pregnancy and lactation as it can cause harmful effects.
